Enteric fistulas represent difficult clinical complications with significant morbidity and mortality. Even with the best available medical care, the mortality rate is as high as 10 to 30% in recent series, while the most common causes of enterocutaneous fistula in the developed countries are inflammatory bowel and diverticular diseases; the main cause in the developing countries is due to post-operative complications of abdominal surgery. By understanding the etiologies involved, the complications encountered, the fistula type and factors for poor outcome strategies to minimize its occurrence were planned and guidelines developed for its treatment as well as, predict the likelihood of spontaneous closure and death.

Key words: Enteric fistulas, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease.
